Being Visionary and Seizing the Momentum - the Strategic Development Plan of TAL for the Next 3-10 Years
While adhering to our vision of becoming one of the top logistics suppliers in Asia and taking into consideration the global picture, the strategic development plan of TAL for the next 3-10 years is formulated on the basis of a thorough analysis of our business results, opportunities and improvement possibilities, aiming to deliver our expected market results.
Strategic Workshop of TAL held at Dongqian Lake
TAL held a three-day closed-door strategic workshop at Landison Dongqian Lake Resort Ningbo during January 19-21, 2022, with well-known consulting agencies in the logistics industry invited. After in-depth exchanges of views, TAL nailed down its strategy for the next 3-10 years based on the “product and depth first” principle: in terms of business model, TAL will develop integrated products in the early stage and supply chain service capability in the later stage; in terms of global network, TAL will focus on Asia and connect to the US in the early stage, and extend global coverage in the later stage.
During the three-day workshop, the management team, by adopting the Business Leadership Model (BLM) and analyzing our customer structure, made it clear that TAL is going to initially realize the B2B logistics transformation by relying on our Chinese and Southeast Asia business within the next 3 years. In terms of business portfolio, an in-depth data analysis was conducted by region and product. H1, which is the continuous profit contributor and core business, and H2, the sustainable growth engine, are identified as key tasks in the strategic plan.
TAL Strategy Officially Announced
After the closing of the strategic workshop, TAL held a year-end work meeting at the new workplace conference room in the Global Shipping Plaza during January 23-25, 2022. At the beginning of the meeting, the chief operating officer announced the strategic development plan of TAL for the next 3-10 years officially, and urged all managers to maintain the hard-working spirit, the learning spirit and the competitive spirit, to walk out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves with “mission impossible”, and to follow the company strategy and integrate all resources possible to achieve our goals. The chief operating officer expressed his determination to achieve the strategic goals within the next three years, whose words were echoed by the audience. Later, representatives of various departments reported their annual work plans based on the company’s strategy, expressing their recognition of the strategy and willingness to implement the strategy.
At the meeting, the CEO interpreted the philosophy of TAL in detail. He clearly stated that in order to achieve the goals, we must optimize organizational structure, promote system standardization, ensure orderly management, optimize work process, improve work efficiency, implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) extensively, and enhance lean management.
TAL Strategy Further Communicated
At the beginning of the Chinese New Year, the strategic plan of TAL was further communicated to senior managers at the director level and above on February 18, 2022, with the assistance of a consulting agency. The strategic plan was thoroughly interpreted, with opinions collected and consensus reached. An on-site test was conducted to make sure all attendees were on the same page. Two presidents expressed their determination to fulfill the strategy and gave instructions to prioritize the strategic plan and overcome all difficulties. In order to ensure a full understanding of the strategic plan and a high degree of consistency among all personnel, one-to-one counseling was provided to some management personnel after the communication, and retests were arranged to track how they improve. From February 25 to March 31, 2022, under the organization of the president's office, the strategic plan was publicized across subsidiaries, offices and departments. Further counseling was given to employees who failed the on-site test, ensuring that the messages were delivered to employees at all levels.
Strategy Implementation
Strategic management is not a magic box or simply a set of skills. It involves analytical thinking and effective allocation of limited resources in a way that is directional, holistic and future-oriented. In the process of publicizing the strategic plan, performance was used as a proxy to divide the overall goal into key tasks and sub-tasks, which are supposed to be assigned to different departments in April and fully integrated into daily operation and management.
